Nina Martin - Her Art and the Australian Bushfires

Art which features animals can be deeply personal, in this post Nina Martin talks about her art and what inspires her!

My name is Nina Martin and I live on the Mid North Coast of New South Wales, Australia where bushfires have recently ravaged a vast amount of land taken lives and many houses. In NSW over 300 houses have been taken by the fires, but many thousands have been saved due to the courageous and tireless efforts of our fantastic Fire Service Personnel, emergency workers and volunteers. The fires came within a kilometre of our house and we evacuated on Friday, 8th November with our 2 children, 2 cats and a dog. We weren't sure what we would be returning to or whether our house would even be standing. We were one of the lucky ones.

With regards to my artwork, I have always been interested in art from a young child. I have mainly used acrylics and dabbled in pastels. Watercolour has been a recent venture for me and I am loving the different challenges this medium presents. I have always featured animals in my art and, for the most part, had animals in my life. As for my style, I am still learning and experimenting with each piece I do as watercolour is still fairly new to me. It can take me up to a couple of hours from the initial sketch to the finished product.

Most recently, I have been working on wildlife from Africa, however because of the recent tragic events here in Australia my next few pieces will be focused on Australian wildlife as an homage to these many beautiful creatures we have so sadly lost in the massive 1.1 million hectares that have been scorched since September and continue to lose as these fires rage on still.

My Instagram name is 'harts678' and features a very early watercolour squirrel I created as my icon. Come visit my page and follow me if you would like to follow my journey. I'm always happy to hear from people. Thank you to Jeevoka for your invitation. I wish all your readers best of health and happiness and of course their beloved creatures too.
